Choosing a prenatal care provider is one of the most important decisions you will make during your pregnancy. Your Obstetrician or Midwife’s birth philosophy, practice preferences, and the guidlines of the institution for which they work, all have meaningful impact on the trajectory of your pregnancy, labor, and birth outcome. So whether you are trying to conceive, newly pregnant, or even looking switch providers, be exceptionally thoughtful about which individual or group practice you select to care for you during pregnancy and birth.
Consider Midwifery Care
Midwives are experienced care professionals trained to support women from menarche through menopause (and beyond!) During pregnancy midwives provide prenatal care to help women stay healthy, well, and strong so they may have optimal birth, breastfeeding-initiation, and postpartum recovery outcomes. The Midwifery Model of Care offers people individualized, culturally competent physical and emotional support. This care is truly woman-centered and provides the ideal model of maternity care.
Midwives from Cleveland Clinic – Fairview
The midwives serving women and pregnant individuals at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital are all Certified Nurse Midwives, sometimes called Nurse Midwives, or CNMs. Certified Nurse Midwives are considered advanced practice nurses. They receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, become registered nurses, and then complete a Master’s degree program and certification in Nurse Midwifery. In Ohio, the majority of Certified Nurse Midwives practice in a hospital setting. Families that choose prenatal care with the Fairview Cleveland Clinic midwives have access to two labor and delivery options. The Birthing Center is the traditional L & D option at Fairview and the Family Birthing Place is a floor within Fairview specifically designed for women and families that want a low-intervention, natural birth experience.
